Dublin Dinosaurs

In the pre-history of my infancy
I lay in bed and heard the monsters come
So ponderous and ominous they came
With such a clang and clamour they advanced
I felt that they were bearing down on me
Dooming me to destruction where I lay
I could not hope that they would pass me by
Was sure they would come bursting in on me
And mangle me beneath their blundering bulk
But no! each monster trundled past my home
Leaving me whole and peaceful and ashamed
Of having let it frighten me so much
But soon another came and then another
Crisis on clamourous crisis I survived
Until I fell asleep.
When tramcars reappear upon our streets
I will with aging equanimity
Welcome them unafraid and entertained
Old Dublin will be my Jurassic Park.
