The
Urge
Maggot picked his nose and waited. The phone
box was an igloo against the burnt umber mountains, the sea sweating spray
onto the land, flat squares grazed by demented cows. The road from Kilmacreannan,
was a grey mottled milliped creeping along the coast, yellow eyes blinking
as cars moved along it.
"Use the yoke weanen, use the yoke "
Dillon, a neighbour, was outside haggard,
his coat shite covered flapped excitedly, his bloodshot eyes rolled he
dribbled now shouting wanting to get in and ring his uncle dead in virginia
for twenty years, "Fuck off will ya ya crabbid ould bastard."
Maggot wasn't giving up the shrine telephone
box, he had to wait for his da, Dillon stumbled on the driving rain smudging
him out, the milliped blinked his ould lad was coming .
The car pulled up and maggot jumped in, it
was pushed in gear and they drove for fanad head. They passed the school
he was never going back there, he didn't need to he was waiting and he
had plans. Around the head land, cattle bawling arses in the wind , their
siren call , soaking the winds , he rolled down the window, put his head
out he could smell them dung, mouldly silage, the land, he would take it,
it was, "Come into fuck. "
He rolled the window up, better not to make
his ould lad angry, though he wasn't afraid tonight, the devils were with
him. The car stopped beside the momument to the fanad men, a grey erect
dick in the darkness carved crazy shapes, words on it some where telling
the story, he knew it, his grandfather whispered it to him once
"The fanad men went out in the dead of night,
the sea chanted as they marched, the perriwinkes watched, the rocks waited
to recieve the colour of his blood, the fanad men went out to lord letrim's
house to take back the land, bogs and ditches, shit huts, and mountains,
the fanad men went back to take back the land, the downing men stayed home,
the churchill men stayed home, it was the fanad men that went, they split
his head, his brain to feed the seabirds , off fanad head, they bludgeoned
him and took back the land, the fanad men. " His grand father leaned over
smiling and grabbed his ear "You'r a fanad man. "
His ould lad coughed and fumbled for a woodbine,
his excitement growing, the rain stopped, the wind licked his match "Fucken
bastard. "
The same, again the wind playing tricks,
he had to have a woodbine before he started .He couldn't do it without
the woodbine ,it was the same every time, Maggot leaned up against the
car, throwing his head to the checkered sky, he would own it and the land
below it, and the red silt at he center of the earth below that, and all
in between
"Wha did ya tell yer wan "
"Nothin "
"Wha did ya tell her ya wee shite about where
you were goin "
"Nothin "
"Don't fucken rise me "
His eyes were wild red revoultions in his
head, the devils entering him
"Wha did ya fucken tell her "
"Gone to falgacarraig trainin"
"Tell me first time when I ask ya ya wee
shite "
The ould lad sucked the life from the cigartette
with his leech like lips, maggot waited to be hit, two minutes it would
be smoked and he would be ready.
"Go on ahead ya wee fuck and I'll be up after
ya "
Maggot knew the way, following the cattle
pock marks in the dark, his ould lads eyes were bad he'd leave the engine
and the lights on to guide him . Maggot reached the edge, and stared at
the sea below, waves spitting foam over the rocks, birds chanting, lights,
devils in the water, some said it was just weed dilsc and ate it, he knew,
his grandfather had told him, it was the devils in the water, the weed
their hair, lurking .
"come on to fuck "
He undid the belt, pulled trousers ,shirts
skin, hard hands, squeezing, stained widefronts the smell of dry shite,
hair
"Come on do me to fuck "
On the edge, the head urging, Maggot pushed
hard inside him he groaned
"Come on harder to fuck "
devils in the water, maggot bit his lip and
pushed, the devils roared, driving him on half hitched trousers, lost balance,
food for the devils, a last groan, his ould lad spilled over the edge into
the darkness, bone splintered on rock .
Maggot stood on the edge looking, he heard
nothing, the motor was running, the perriwinkes whispered, the sea birds
screamed, devils in the water laughed, his
father is dead, the farm is his, the land
is his, he is a fanad man
