On a recent trip to Ireland, its a long way from the bottom of
Australia, I asked a friend who is the best Irish novelist. Patrick
McCabe, she said. So I read Butcher Boy and the Dead School. Yes he's
pretty good. I love the ingenuous tone of the narrative which
counterpoints the horror of the events and that lovely fluent prose
rhythm he gets going. His depiction of the narrowness and brutality of
some aspects of irish culture in past decades is and antidote to the
nostalgia set up in the hearts of the irish diaspora in far away
countries and times.

Regards to all.
