Hi List,
Neil Jordan's latest film was dissapointing to say the least. As
someone who admires his work as a director and writer, I felt that
the studio must have had a substantial hand in its production. The
Jordanesqe archtypal motifs (the apples!) seemed clumsily woven
into a rather thin schlock-horror plot, the kind of which is almost
dated by the presence of the more "knowing" examples of the genre
made recently such as Scream or "I know what you did....". I hope
Jordan has full control over his next film, probably funded by his fee
for this one ;)
It would be interesting to see if anyone had a "wish list" of Irish
novels which they would like to see made into a film by Neil Jordan
... or indeed another director. How about one of Friels Plays? Jordan
directing "Faith Healer"? Or who would be a good candidate for
taking a stab at Flann O'Brien? I believe Ewan McGregor, fresh
from Obi-Wanning, will be playing Joyce in a film on these shores
soon (putting Sandycove on the map ;)
Anyway, this list seems to have had a snooze after the "top 10"
thread, in contrast to the buzzing message board.. both Nessa and
myself have been on holidays *and* have started new jobs ( myself
in Nua <http://www.nua.ie>) so some of the plans for this site have
taken a back seat for the time being. My week needs to grow an
extra day ;)
I've wanted to do a complete redesign, set up the "poetic postcards"
(it just needs a front end) the secure shop for poetry books and
generally give this site the attention it deserves, since its grown ito the
"first up" Irish literary community site and holds oodles of potential
still. Which brings me to a suggestion: we could use a little help. How
about it? ...and in the following areas:
1. Acornlive moderator(s)
would you like to keep the chat buzzing? The list is managed via e-
mail to the Majordomo progam on our server.
2. Message board moderator (s)
Similarly, the Discus message board can be configured for
moderators, open groups, closed groups through a web interface.
You could be anywhere and practice the 'gardening'.. facilitating a
group to chat about what they enjoy. The poetry/short story
workshops are buzzing prently and there is some excellent work
being posted as it is.
3. Graphics and HTML.
It would be great to get a hand with this work.. different looks and
feels to each edition of Electric Acorn.. developing a few design
templates working collaboratively.
Don't worry if the technicalities would prevent you from giving it a
try, you'll have help. We always intended this site to be an "open" site
and since its now reached a certain size it makes sense to ask you, if
you'd enjoy the challenge of helping to see that this growth continues
smoothly apace. Answers and suggestions on a postcard, please ......
Thanks,
Mark
