dear, oh dear.
i am afraid i wouldn't like to see neil jordan directing any novels. or
anything else for that matter. after one good movie - the crying game, and
an at best biopic of michael collins irish folk seem to think him the
business. most of his stuff prior to the crying game was poor, and since
then his output has not been much better - interview with a vampire being a
horribly painful experience, and the butcher boy was an exersize in
mediocrity.
of all the novels in the world i would like captain corelli's mandolin to
make it on screen, it has alot of visual potential. but it's not irish is
it. i can't think of any irish novels that i would like to see so i'll go
for a play; observe the sons of ulster marching towards the somme. it would
have to be done by someone with a real flare for visuals to take it out of
its medium. someone like a spielberg, or like sam raimi (without the
obsession with the occult), though i might lie on the side of a more
accomplished serious dramatist like john sayles, maybe even a jeunet
(without his absurdity). frankly i don't think that irish directors have
the visual touch, possibly with the exception of jordan, but that is his
only saving grace, i would challenge anyone to watch any of the recent
releases from ireland and tell me they are as accomplished looking as those
of the continent or hollywood.
just as long as we never see another maeve binchy film, ever, i'll be
happy. i spend my life in the cinema and it would intrude so terribly.
(just think of circle of friends).
conor.
