I guess it's a question of what you mean by prohibitive - most
writers' retreats operate on a full board basis, so you have no other
expenses while you are there - for example Anam Cara charges
somewhere in the region of Ir£300 a week on that basis - Salmon
Poetry's place is probably something similar
(www.salmonpoetry.com) - as is the Tyrone Guthrie Centre
(www.tyroneguthrie.ie) - there is also a place called The Heinrich
Boll Cottage on Achill Island - I don't have its details here but I'll
retrieve them - they may have a more subsidised approach to
writers but it's entirely self-catering. Otherwise, the approach might
be to come, find a quiet bed and breakfast some where (probably
around £25 a night in our current tourist deprived times) and write
on your own.
