A Thousand Welcomes Less One
by Liam Ronan
I watch.
The van staggers,
stops;=20
vomits a stream
of steamin'
antifreeze=20
bang on=20
me snowdrops.
the wheel,
stiletto-heeled,
gray skirted,
herself emerges
snivellin' some soliloquy
into a cell phone.
=91Baby on
board' indeed!
With her
dirty Dublin accent,
and far from=20
home,
she'll be findin'
no connection
to any
D=E1il tone
here=20
in west Mayo.
This isn't=20
Dun Laoghaire,
Dearie, and
I'm one culchie=20
who can still,=20
inched above the sill,=20
smell a caper;
-I read
the local paper-
memorize a face.=20
So
just in case
ye've taken it=20
in yer head
to cross=20
me cattle grid;
ring the bell;
sit a spell;
scrounge me tea
while waitin' for
the cavalry,
I'm after loosin'
the Jackeen Russel
to greet ye.
He'll put=20
a nip
in that step;
chase yer charmin'
self east-along
to another farm.
I run=20
a proper B&B
and can't chance=20
a stranger
like ye
puttin' the wind
up me Yanks.
