 Maeve O'Sullivan

Fathomless

Before I drift into a deeper sleep,
While jaded mind succumbs to drowsy mist,
There is one matter I would like to keep -
The twist of your hair in my knuckled fist.

I would be merried by your boyish laugh,
Its coy contagion travelling the throat.
A chocolate kiss upon a double raft,
Spontaneously overboard, afloat.

The tempests tend to take us unawares
And light’ning strikes us when we least expect it,
But still and all we’re not too eas’ly scared
In this dream of blue waves weathering true grit.

Awake to find your tresses in my hand
With promise of a passage to dry land.

The water is still
a boy watches –
did someone switch the fountain off?

*

Last chance to see the ceiling:
“auditorium closed
for rehearsals”.

*

On my return home -
a sunflower,
just like the one in the Metro.

(German in no time)

Lesson One:
Is the pen black or white?
Darn it!
The woman’s drunk.

Lesson Two:
Could you repeat it, please?
Peter’s rich, but John’s poor.
It isn’t an easy lesson.

Lesson Three:
The new gloves are white.
What’s the matter?
Big men are strong.

Lesson Four:
Paris is near London.
My coat’s red and so is yours.
The little lake’s over there.

Lesson Five:
It’s six o’clock in New York and noon in Bonn.
January’s a cold month, of course.
Is that your taxi or mine?

Lesson Six:
We aren’t in Frankfurt and neither are you.
My broad’s pretty and yours is too.
This book’s boring, but that one’s interesting.

Lesson Seven:
We don’t have problems anymore.
We’re never at home.
She isn’t ever at work.

Lesson Eight:
Are you coming tomorrow?
We’re eating, but these things are bad.
Whose turn is it?
Does she love that bastard?
She only reads good books.
Do I ask too many questions?

Lesson Nine:
He’s fat because he loves bread.
Of course I know that you’ve been here since March.
He drives a fast car because he’s always in a hurry.
I know more or less who he is.
I must say that I’m crazy about music.

Lesson Ten:
That big yellow car belongs to my rich boss.
I feel like having a cold drink.
If you have time, you can help your brother.
If he beats his girl, she’ll leave.
Do you suggest this book, or that one?
