Dublin Corporation, The
Irish Writers' Centre and Poetry
Ireland have joined forces to present the first annual Dublin
Writers Festival, sponsored by AIB Bank and running from 13 to
16 June.
Given its literary reputation, it's appropriate
that Dublin should be the location for what, it is hoped, will
develop into a world-class literary festival. The plan that has
been adopted will see the festival grow between now and 2000 to
an international festival of the first rank. This year, the organisers
have concentrated on establishing a strong Irish base, with a
number of welcome guests. In future years, as additional resources
become available, audiences will be treated to a rich diversity
of world literature.
Supported by the Arts
Council and the British Council, this year's festival will
begin with Maeve Binchy, Deirdre Purcell and Marian Keyes on a
Saturday afternoon in Andrew's Lane Theatre. It will finish on
Bloomsday, a free reading with Roddy Doyle, Dermot Healy, Rita
Ann Higgins, Tony Curtis, Frank Harte and Catherine Phil McCarthy
in St Anne's Church in Dawson Street.
The festival will feature visiting writers
James Kelman, Herta Müller, Marina Warner, Helen Dunmore, Carol
Ann Duffy, Luke Davies and Tom Leonard, returning writers Paul
Muldoon and Edna O'Brien, poets Seamus Heaney, Cathal O Searcaigh,
Peter Fallon, novelists John Banville, Aidan Higgins, John McKenna,
Mary Leland, Anne Haverty and Evelyn Conlon.
Also included is a celebration, through
poetry and music, of the centenary of one of Spain's greatest
20th century writers, Federico Garcia Lorca. Events will take
place in a variety of city centre venues -- Andrew's Lane Theatre,
Dublin Castle, the River Club in Merchants' Arch, the Irish Writers'
Centre -- and in a number of public libraries.
It also features a Poetry
Slam -- in effect an 'open mike' opportunity for a wide range
of writers to participate as performers in the festival M.C.'ed
by Dublin Writers' Workshop Member, Nessa
O'Mahony
