DWW members take part in Bowes Pub reading

DWW members Philip Brown, Seamus Ua Trodd and Sean Carey are taking part in the first of a new series of readings at Bowes Pub, Fleet Street, on Sunday 21st February, at 8pm. The series, entitled Poetry at Bowes, is organised by StatoBlast. The first reading will also feature Michael O'Flanagan and Liam O'Meara of the Syllables Writers Group.

 

DWW member Nessa O'Mahony launches first poetry collection

DWW member Nessa O'Mahony sees the publication of her first poetry collection, "Bar Talk" at the National Museum, Kildare Street, Friday 12th February at 6pm. Haiku Spirit on Japanese TV

The Irish haiku journal, Haiku Spirit, the online version of which is featured on the Dublin Writers Workshop website at http://www.dublinwriters.org/haiku/index.html, was the only English language haiku journal featured on a recent TV programme on haiku which was broadcast by Kyoto TV on January 5th, 1999.

 

Writers Inc. / Bookstop Poetry and Short Story Competition

Writers Inc., Anna Livia FM's creative writing programme, is running a literary competition in conjunction with Bookstop. There are prizes in both poetry and short story categories. Entrants can submit up to 3 poems, maximum 40 lines, or 3 stories, maximum 1600 words. There is an entrance fee of £2 per item, or £5 for three. The closing date is 28th January, 1999, and entries should be sent to:

DWW resumes meetings on 11th January

The Dublin Writers Workshop resumes meeting on the first three Mondays of each month from Monday 11th January, at the upstairs lounge of Bowes Public House, Fleet Street, Dublin 2. .

 

Christmas Poetry Reading

DWW member Nessa O'Mahony will be reading poetry, along with Tony Kelly and Yvonne Cullen, at the Dublin Meditation Centre, Temple Bar, Dublin, on Thursday 17th December, 1998, at 7.30pm.

DWW Gets Great Review.

This site was awarded four stars out of a possible five by leading internet magazine Web Ireland in its December issue. The site was commended for its stylish design and its wide range of activities.

Members of the Dublin Writers Workshop will be taking part in a reading with the Crescent Writers Group, from Belfast, as part of a North-South literary exchange. The DWW hopes to travel back up to Belfast later in the year.
Admission free, refreshments will be served.

D.W.W. member Michael Wynne is one of three writers having one-act plays performed as part of the Profilers series which includes three plays based on original short stories. Profilers is being organised by InCognito, the literary journal.

will also be reading.

Dublin Writers Workshop member Nessa O'Mahony hosted Dublin's first major Poetry Slam which happened as part of the new Dublin Writers Festival. .
15 poets competed with each other for a cash prize and a keg of beer - the winner was the poet who managed to wow the enthusiastically participating audience [hecklers and poetry lovers alike] during his or her 5 minute spot.

Update: Maighread Medbh , Poet and Publisher of the newsletter "Local Litir" Thundered into first place (£100 + Keg of beer + title "Bard of Temple Bar") at the Inagural Poetry Slam with DWW member Christine Broe coming a very close second. Nessa played a blinder as M.C. and a great night was had by all!

The Launch of "Crossings", the new collection by Dublin Writers' Workshop member Gwyn Parry, is being launched at the Irish Writers' Centre.
"Crossings", which is being published by Salmon Publishing Ltd, is Gwyn's first Irish collection, although he has had two collections published in his native Wales.
A number of the poems contained in "Crossing" are featured in the first issue of "Electric Acorn"

Spring arts festival in Tuscany, Italy
  
We received the following from Michael Mele:
             
          "Dear Dublin Writing Group, 

          I am the director of Il Chiostro di Toscana, a spring arts program in 
          Tuscany, Italy.  Each year in May we offer a 2-week fiction writing 
          workshop.  At this moment we still have 2-3 slots available for 
          non-American participants which we will offer to qualified candidates 
          for a minimum fee (approximately $200/week) which covers room, 2 meals 
          per day and the workshop fee. 

          Since the time is short, we will offer these spots on a first-come, 
          first-served basis to qualified fiction writers.

Award 1998 for her short story, "Indian Giver".

'Eye Catching' a collaborative public art installation by DWW member
Nessa O'Mahony and visual artist Sandra Meehan has just been
installed in Dundalk Train Station as part of the Connect Public Art in
Transit programme. It will remain in place until the end of March,

in the prestigious RTE Francis MacManus Awards. 
she won the prize for a short story, "After Life"
